Why some touch controls feel great and others fight you

Why some touch controls feel great and others fight you

I've played games where the controls vanished from my mind within seconds, and others I never stopped wrestling with. The difference is rarely the big stuff — it's a hundred tiny decisions.

Button size and placement matter enormously. Thumbs cover a lot of screen, and a well-designed game keeps controls near the edges where your hands naturally rest. The worst offenders put important taps right under where your thumb blocks the action.

Timing windows are the other half. Forgiving inputs feel responsive; strict ones feel broken, even when they're technically working. The best games fake generosity so smoothly you never notice.

Next time a mobile game feels off, pay attention to where your thumbs are and how much slack the inputs give you. You'll start spotting the good designers quickly.
